The New School Experience

It’s an exciting time to be at ISKL. Not only because it’s a new school year, but because of a new campus. We’ve asked a few of our fellow friends at ISKL to give us an insight on how their experience of the new campus was like for them.

Ryan L. ‘20

Ryan is new to our ISKL community this year has received the Annual IB Scholarship Award and is a passionate debater. Here’s what Ryan has to say about our campus!

What were you most excited about coming to our new campus?

ISKL is a new environment for me. I haven’t been to an International School before because I’ve always been in a Malaysian Public School. In terms of what I was most excited about when coming to the new campus is just the environment we’re surrounded with since everything is new to me this year.

What areas would you say our new campus is good at?

I really like the fact that our campus is environmentally friendly. It promotes a lifestyle where people actively recycle and use less plastic. But I also enjoy the people here. The culture here is extremely friendly and I just love how outgoing the people are as well as how the teachers are really friendly and approachable, especially when I stumble with challenges and struggles, so it’s easier for them to help me and easier for me to get help from them.

As some of our facilities in our new campus are still under construction, which facility are you looking forward to the most?

I’m looking forward to the completion of the field and the gymnasium because I was planning to start my own personal workout routine, but I’m not able to do so at the moment due to the facilities not being completed yet, so I can’t execute that plan.

What could be improved about our new campus?

I would like to reiterate that overall, it’s a very nice campus, but I think that the food prices have to be reviewed because they’re rather expensive and a bit overpriced in my opinion. But even though people could afford it, I think it’s still one area that’s quite burdensome to some people.

How do you like the working/studying environment of our new campus?

I think the fact that the school prepared a lot of common areas for the ISKL community really makes it easier for us to meet up and to study. Essentially, I think that the school is a very conducive environment for people to carry on their own revisions and to meet up with their friends and the environment certainly makes it purely great.

Mr. Farrington – High School Principal

Whether it’s someone who could help bring order to our school or to bring enlightenment, Mr. Farrington doesn’t see our new school as just a new school. He sees the new campus as a base structure for new possibilities and experiences for years to come. Here’s what he has to say when asked about our new campus.

What were you looking forward to the most in our new campus?

I was looking forward to just getting here. There was a lot of anticipation for this new campus with probably 5 to 7 years of work and development and even more years when you add up looking for the right location. So there was so much built up, we were like “Okay let’s get there” Let’s get on the new campus and let’s get started and see what is it going to do for us.

As some of our facilities in our new campus are still under construction, which facility are you looking forward to the most?

The facilities that I’m looking forward to the most are the extracurriculars, so our athletics and our performing arts center. We’ve got an enormous art center coming online probably at the end of October. I haven’t been in there yet, I don’t even know how it looks like, so I’m very much looking forward to what it could do for us when compared to our Robert B Gaw Theatre at the old school. The other aspect that I’m looking forward to is that we’ve never had a track at our school. So we’ve now got this new field that’s going in at around October, and we never had a culture of sports for track and field where we have our own track on sight so I’m looking forward to actually seeing some 100 meter dashes or some shot puts all in our school property which will be new for all of us at ISKL.

What could be improved about our new campus?

Well, we got a lot of things happening and they’re coming online now. But I guess overall since this is an enormous building, it is massive. For example, the spine from elementary to high school is half a kilometer long. So, it is an expansive place and so what could be improved is around the questions of how can we build community in a big place like this? Where are our gathering places? Where do we meet? Do we see each other? How do we make sure we don’t get lost in a big place like this?

Which area of the new campus is your favorite and why?

I am really enjoying seeing students find places that didn’t exist in the old campus. So in the old campus, you see students clustered around the deck areas or the library, but at the new campus, there are so many more common spaces and more comfortable spaces with new furniture and cool lightings. For example, the science commons has a big space where students could do group works. I like the commons in wing 1 where the light goes up all the way to the 4th floor and the students are finding their spaces. So it’s really interesting for me to see where students are starting to gather and when we finish the performing arts center as well as the gymnasium and the field, it would be interesting to see where students will gather.

What do you miss most about our previous campus?

Well, in the old campus, you can’t help but see people because it was a small space and we were very crowded, so everywhere you walked, you were bumping into people, you always saw teachers whereas here, it’s going to take some energy to be able to see each other. So, I miss that sense of community just because we were on top of each other. It’s also going to take time to think of strategies to build up more community in our new campus.

Would you say the current environment of the new campus enhances our learning when compared to our previous campus?

Absolutely. The old campus hindered what teachers were trying to do. It hindered because of scheduling, conflicts with a class taking up the same facility at the same time as well as timetabling with classes. But with the new campus, the ability for us to use a timetable is greatly enhanced at this new campus because we have one more classroom per department to share and use. We’ve got opportunities on this new campus for teachers to do things here that we didn’t have on the other campus. Teachers are also using the common spaces much much more which creates more interaction with the students. And things that are new here, like the track will enhance what the teachers can do with the students. And if you think about it, parents don’t send their students here just because it’s a shiny new building, but because of the learning and interactions that happen with the students and teachers, so this new campus definitely enhances those interactions.

Sophia S. ‘19

Being in her senior year, Sophia feels very much like ISKL is her second home in Malaysia. Having spent the past 3 years at the old campus, she shares how she feels about the new campus.

What were you looking forward to the most in our new campus?

I was looking forward to a bigger space to work with and especially the senior deck as the previous senior deck was quite small and with the new senior deck, I was hoping that our grade will get closer to one another as well as becoming a positive environment to work in.

As some of our facilities in our new campus are still under construction, which facility are you looking forward to the most?

I’m really looking forward to the Robert B Gaw Theatre in ISKL as I think it’s something special that only ISKL has. I’m also looking forward to the track fields and the softball pitches as it was hard to play softball in the old campus especially with all the mosquitoes around, but with this one, I’m hoping that our playing will be better.

What could be improved about our new campus?

Even though the campus is much bigger, there is a bit of a flaw here and there, especially with the cafeteria. We did get a bigger cafeteria, but it feels like it’s now more crowded than it used to and the prices have gone up a lot which could ruin lunchtime experiences, especially by having to wait in line for at least 10 minutes and then you get to the front and then you realize that you have to pay 14 ringgit for a plate of meal when you could’ve gotten it for around 8 ringgit in the last campus. So I think that’s something we can improve on. And since this campus is overwhelming, especially for new students, it’s harder to get around by walking up multiple staircases just to get to classes so I think we could’ve made classes less spread out in terms of where they are in the campus.

Which area of the new campus is your favorite and why?

I really like the common rooms in between the classrooms and each department because it’s a good place to hang out and mingle with your friends before and after classes and it just makes the whole environment friendlier and more positive. You could also interact and get closer to your teachers where you could ask for help which is always beneficial

What do you miss most about our previous campus?

Even though our previous campus was quite small, it felt very cozy and more like home because having spent almost 3 years at the old campus, I did feel like I was closer to a lot of people and it was a nice place in general. Not saying this new campus is bad, but having this campus be this big, it feels like we are more segregated from each other.

Would you say the current environment of the new campus enhances our learning when compared to our previous campus?

I think it does enhance our learning because, with the more modern campus, we’ve got more facilities and opportunities to develop our skills like the walls as our whiteboards. And for the upcoming generations, I feel like this is a good place for us to learn before we head out into the world and continue our journey.

We hope that the new campus brings more memorable moments and experiences that enhances the ISKL experience just like how it did with the previous campus. With that said, we can’t wait for what new experiences the new campus has in store for us.
